EXT. NIGHT OVER A BARREN, SANDY PLANE
A grand golden tower, an eye carved into its apex, stands center screen, alone on the plane. Three figures - human, but unidentifiable - enter the tower.
A figure, dressed in white robes, decorated with strange insignia or runes, stands in the foreground, on the left extreme of our field of vision. Scale is hard to tell in this empty plane, but from our perspective, he is as tall as the tower. He wears a helmet of polished bone - an ovoid alien skull, green lenses set into the eyes, its spinal collumn set into the face like some strange proboscis. The figure watches as the tower topples.
CLOSE ON FIGURE
The figure holds a pouch, made of soft leather and tied with a golden cord. He loosens it and reaches in - his skin is the pale white of polished ivory, his fingernails black, and reflecting the stars in the night sky - he pulls out a handfull of sand and sprinkles it on the ground before him. From the earth sprout three more unidentifiable human figures, all tiny in comparison to the figure in white.
PAN RIGHT AND WIDEN, AGAIN TAKING IN THE TOWER
The three figures start towards the ruins of the tower. A wind kicks up, blowing the sand across our field of vision.
INT. WESLEY DODDS ESTATE - BEDROOM
The bedroom is simply and sparely decorated, but what little there is speaks to the wealth and taste of its owner. It is dominated by two things - a number of bookshelves lining the wall to the right as we look at it, and a king-size bed against the back wall. In the bed are a man and a woman - WESLEY DODDS and DIAN BELMONT. They are sound asleep, and Dian has one arm hooked around Wesley's waist, but as we cut to them, Wesley wakes, sitting up and reaching for his glasses.
CLOSE ON WESLEY AND DIAN
As Wesley pulls on his glasses, his motion wakes Dian.
Wes? Are you alright?
WESLEY FROWNS AND CLIMBS OUT OF BED.
I have to go, Dian.
DIAN FROWNS, AND WESLEY LEANS IN, KISSING HER CHEEK QUICKLY.
I'll be back soon. Go back to sleep.
WESLEY WALKS TO THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ROOM, THE ANGLE WIDENING TO KEEP BOTH HIM AND DIAN IN FRAME.
Wesley touches the wall, tripping a well-hidden switch. A hidden door swings open, revealing a staircase leading down. He decends off screen.
CLOSE ON DIAN
She watches Wes leave.
Sleep he says... Come home safely, Wes.
INT. WATCHTOWER - TELEPORTER ROOM
A man appears in one of the teleport tubes. He wears a pinstripe suit, duster, fedora and leather gloves. He would not be out of place in a pulp detective novel, save that he also wears a gasmask, and carries a strange weapon - a handgun with a gas canister, rather than a chamber and barrel. He is the SANDMAN.
(His voice is deep, and vaguely sinister, filtered through his mask)
J'onn J'onnz, I come with a wa...
SANDMAN STEPS OUT OF THE TELEPORT TUBE INTO AN EMPTY ROOM.
The lights are on, the computer consoles active, but there is nobody in the room save Sandman. He moves out, and we see a montage - the monitor room, a training room, the locker room, the quarters of one or more of the Leaguers. All empty.
